Offener Brief an Premierminister Tony Blair im Kampf gegen das Verbot der traditionellen britischen Fuchsjagden; von Freitag, dem 18. Februar 2005:

"Sir,

The Free Church of Country Sports is an umbrella ecumenical organisation dedicated to country sports and the traditions associated with them. From today, the activities of supporters of the Church have been abolished or severely curtailed by your Government. We, the founders of the Church, wish to register with you and members of your Government a complaint of racial and religious discrimination.

The Church recognises Saint Hubert, the Patron Saint of Hunting. Those members of our congregation who take part in country sports receive spiritual inspiration from their activities. Well over 11,000 supporters of the Church have signed a declaration on the internet confirming exactly that.

As with other churches and religions, we have our own rituals, literature, art and cultural traditions, some of which pre-date Christianity.

The blessing of the hounds in the name of St Hubert and drinking from the stirrup cup are acts of communion and rituals of a sacramental nature, connected with the provision of food for the table in early times.

The giving of silver spoons and salvers and engraved bowls at puppy shows has its roots in Christian baptism.

The white hounds of St Hubert are ancestors of the foxhounds used in Britain to this day. They were blessed by St Hubert, and some 1,300 years later, in 2005, every hunt in the United Kingdom will again be urged by The Free Church of Country Sports to carry out the annual blessing of the hounds on or before the Feast Day of St Hubert in November, at the commencement proper of the foxhunting season.

The religious activities of those involved in the various country sports - hunting, shooting, fishing etc. - are not confined to country pursuits. Individuals of many denominations who worship at churches and chapels throughout the country regularly give thanks for the spiritual fulfilment they receive from their activities in the countryside.

The curtailment of their activities impinges on their fundamental human rights.

The founders of The Free Church of Countrysports have a pastoral role to play. They want to see those who support traditional country sports treated fairly and in an even-handed manner by those in positions of power.

The determination of a section of society, which currently has political power, to criminalize the activities of people of whom they do not approve has meant that the sword of Damocles has been hanging over followers of traditional country pursuits for decades. We believe that it is quite wrong that a minority should be persecuted and oppressed in this way.

The founders of The Free Church of Country Sports have no position on ritual slaughter, as carried out by some ethnic groups in this country on religious grounds, but feels that it is immoral for the Government to tacitly agree to this practice while at the same time criminalizing foxhunting.

The Church believes minority groups of mainly British origin have the same rights as all other ethnic majorities - even if the Commission for Racial Equality and some courts of law have difficulty with this - and wishes to make it known that it considers the British Government to be guilty of racial and religious discrimination.

The Parliamentary privilege that may, or may not, protect politicians does not make this discrimination a lesser sin in the eyes of our Creator.

The Government's own inquiry into hunting was fair and impartial and it did not make a case for a ban on foxhunting. Lord Burns led the inquiry and he confirmed this in the House of Lords.

We, the undersigned, believe the deliberate and callous destruction of a traditional rural way of life is an unwarranted and unacceptable attack on the sensibilities and spirituality of individuals who comprise and entirely legitimate though ethnologically diverse section of the British population.

While the Church draws the line at unfairly comparing the activities of Government with those of Adolph Hitler, and rejects the idea that there is a plot to ethnically cleanse non-Labour rural Britain, it does believe that racial hatred or cultural intolerance on any level - even when aimed at a few individuals in red coats - is grossly divisive and socially unacceptable.

We call upon you, Prime Minister, to bring these issues to the attention of members of the Parliamentary Labour Party. While we realise that it may be politically impossible for you to accede to such a request, we are duty bound to request that members of your Government have the humility and common sense to quickly repeal this Act of Parliament to prevent long-term damage to the social fabric of this country.

Rob Brammer, Vic Gardner and John Milne,

Founders of The Free Church of Country Sports."
